Tata Group 150 years History and its Business


You know that "TATA Group" is the oldest group in India, i.e., 150 years of journey (1868-2018) and TATA Group have handled almost all sectors. i.e., TCS, Tata Motor, Tata Steel, Tata Power and many other sectors. In this article, you know some information about the TATA Group and its business with Timeline.

1830 - Early 1830s Nusserwanji Tata started trading in Cotton and other Commodities in Mumbai.

1868 - Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata age 29, son of Nusserwanji Tata, started a trading company with a capital of Rs 21,000 moved into the Textile business.

1869 - Jamsetji acquired a dilapidated and bankrupt oil mill in Chinchpokli, Mumbai, Maharashtra, started a Cotton Mill named “Alexandra Mill” and sold it to the local Cotton Merchant.

1874 - Jamsetji had floated a fresh enterprise, the Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company, with a seed capital of Rs1.5 lakh. It is Empress Mills in Nagpur, Maharashtra. In 1886, Employee Welfare initiatives in Empress Mills.

1898 - Taj Mahal Hotel foundation in Mumbai. In 1903, The Taj Mahal Hotel Opened and It was the first building with electricity in Bombay and It is ranked Number One on the list of the strongest Indian brands by Brand Finance in their coveted ‘India 100 2020’ report.

1907 - Tata Steel was established in India as Asia’s first integrated private steel company at Sakchi which is named Jamshedpur to honour Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata which is India's first industrial city.

1910 - Tata Hydroelectric Power Supply Company founded by Dorabji Tata to his father Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata vision of Tata Power.

1917 - TOMCO “The TATA OIL MILLS & Co. LTD” and Launches iconic Soap brand “HAMAM” and Launches India's first cosmetics brand “Lakme” ideal for Women and later it sold to Hindustan Unilever in 1984.

1932 - The first flight in the history of Indian aviation lifted off from Karachi with JRD and Nevill Vintcent at the controls of a Puss Moth. They started as a Mail service. Tata Air Services was later renamed Tata Airlines founded by J. R. D. Tata, has his first Pilot license in India.

1939 - Tata Chemicals was incorporated in isolated, coastal Mithapur. A thriving community grows around the plant as the company grows into a market leader. Tata Chemicals introduces Tata Salt—the country's first iodised branded salt in 1983.

1945Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Ltd. (TELCO) founded by J. R. D. TATA and truck TATA Mercedes-Benz introduced with Joint Venture Daimler Benz.

1954 - Tata Sons Limited joined with Volkart Brothers formed Voltas Ltd in Mumbai - India's 1st Air Conditioner.

1962 - The group’s interest in the beverages space. Tata Finlay (later, Tata Tea; now, Tata Global Beverages) is born.

1968 - Tata Consultancy Services Limited initially started as "Tata Computer Systems" was founded by a division of Tata Sons Limited.

1969 - Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Ltd. (TELCO) was named Tata Motor and the first Tata branded Truck was introduced with the new logo T, when collaboration ended with Daimler Benz, Germany.

1984 - The group clocks another win as Titan Industries, a JV with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), makes a splash in a watch-starved market. Titan launches “Raaga”(1992), “Fastrack”(1998) brands.

1994 - Titan revolutionised the Indian jewellery market with Tanishq. The retail brand brings transparency to an unorganised sector.

2001 - The group strengthens its presence in the insurance sector with two joint ventures — Tata AIG and Tata AIA.

2002 - The Tata group acquires a controlling stake in VSNL, establishing Tata Communications. The company is a global leader in network solutions, mobility and IoT.

2006 - The group responds to the transforming satellite entertainment space by launching DTH (Direct-to-Home) provider, Tata Sky.

2012 - TGBL's JV with international coffee giant, Starbucks, is welcomed by coffee lovers..

2015 - Vistara - Tata Sons' JV with Singapore Airlines.

Global Brand

2008 - Jaguar Land Rover has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Motors.
